Ten years ago, on Jan 9, 2002, John Yoo and Robert Delahunty wrote the infamous memo which argued that the Geneva Conventions did not apply to the treatment of prisoners who were Al Qaeda or Taliban or “non-state” or rogue state combatants. This memo had the cornerstone effect of providing a green light for the harsh treatment of detainees in Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and CIA “black sites” worldwide.

I also have a long standing relationship with John Le Carre's novel , Tinker, Tailor, Soldier. Spy where they employ the slang " circus " for the highest levels of the British Intelligence Services.

i do not have any images today, i have been cleaning houses to make my money and i am thinking about the complexity of living a life within a structure. i mean that we are born at this point into a structure, a structure that the ows movement is at its most sublime trying to get us to question. i was talking recently with a complete stranger at a bar about the realization that so many humans have lived before us and we have access to many of their thoughts dreams hopes resolutions ( all one word, no comma's ) and really this is where we are at? this is the totality of that wealth of human existence? as an artist i am feeling more and more that if capitalism isnt sucking the art out of art than it is academia. with a graduate degree i have a hard time figuring out where i will find a school to teach at that wants to challenge students not to draw realistic images from life to be exact but use drawing to connect to oneself. what do you see? how does it make you feel? what do you have to say about it? why would you draw? and what is the relevance of drawing in 2011?

i have found the product which can replace bleach.

it is a powder. mix a few tablespoons in a spray bottle with water and use it when you need to.

i am using it on my refrigerator door handles which are white and made of a textured material.

usually i clean the fridge and these handles are a dull accompaniment to my shining box.

but today all the gray was removed.

it is these minor triumphs which keep me moving through the house.

say good bye to your chlorine. you will still have to wear gloves.

worked on this drawing while moving things around in studio. very nice velvet brown in front that you cannot see. combining curves with lines. i felt better for drawing.

first i made this drawing which is pretty sweet but photographed badly

i decided to put it with some other items. i have a need to balance. even the photo has equal space on top and bottom. boring.

i decide to jettison drawing and work with the skin. add iron ball.

finally i put the cement slab, fur frosting and iron ball next to chums.
i will call it, " kids will play with anything ".

this is the cowl i knitted for palma. i also made one for peaches.

this is christmas dinner table. small and quiet just like i like it.

this is the hat that i made for peaches but then was put through the wash and dried by accident. many tears, but it is beautiful. as it only fits the head of a two year old i am trying to reproduce results in grown up size. i am knitting and washing swatches ( to be shown later ).

the night i realized what being in love really feels like. as in oh, being in love is relaxing, supportive, sexy, mysterious, happy, and a freakin blast everyday. i am so glad i finally made it.

the school bathroom i wish was clean. imagine that gray trash can pristine and the floor swept. i would have a beautiful picture. the drapery of the paper towel has captured my attention.

it finally happened. i accepted a tattoo into my life. a beautiful evening which began with a magic meal with magic ladies, amazing dinner table debate fueled by passion, wine and limoncello. a drive to a bar where we saw some amazing carnival sights and then home whence it all began. everything was ready and crystal drew the O's. i like them very much. decorative, hand drawn, happy O's. our puffy skies. everyday i feel more serious and more clear and more aware that being all together is the opposite of hell.

watching tv while i knit when a movie with marlene dietrich comes on called the scarlet empress. a movie about catherine the great. catherine stages a coup to take the russian throne from her husband peter. she dresses up and rides with the guards. i couldnt help but notice her guard costume looked a little familiar. this movie was made in 1934. wizard of oz was made in 1939 and once i checked it out the witches guards also called winkies are dressed hollywood style russian guard. does this make the wicked witch catherine the great?

went over 100 hundred bricks and drying them for install on friday. there is the cribbage track and the scrabble tiles. the fan grid and the fine lines on the radiator. the bricks look like a track left from a vehicle tire rolling through my house. on another note, who needs a studio? my entire house is the studio. please pick up your dishes.

if you zoom into this bottom one and go to the back my favorite part is the green grass hanging from under the orange plastic fence. didnt notice it until i was home on the computer. plust the fine red line on the lathe sticks around the white covered mound and the weight of the sand. the sculpture is in there somewhere. a universal body and weight relationship.

i went to the coffee shop in my neighborhood this morning, early.
i saw a friend.
i told him his hair looked longer.
i kept looking at him, i mean i couldn't stop looking at him.
i said, finally, you look soft.
he said, i have cancer.
im halfway through chemo.
we kept looking at each other, as all the unsayable words recalibrated my reality.
when he could see that i had caught up he said that it is now a matter of how much time he has.
we hugged.
as i pushed open the door and stepped onto the sidewalk, i began to cry.
that embarrassing, primal crying, i couldn't get my mittens on.
there at the stop light, in a car, was another friend, who said hey, are you okay?
he pulled over, jumped out of his car and had me in a hug.
this is how it is my neighborhood.
